The goddess of love and beauty, Venus, rules romance, values, art, and aesthetics. Venus seeks to possess and embrace what she cherishes, resonates with, or desires.
Venus goes retrograde for 40 days every 18 months. When she goes retrograde, her “backspin” marks Venus’ shift from the Evening Star, when she can be seen low on the horizon, to the Morning Star when she rises before the Sun. Two weeks into her retrograde phase, she will be directly behind the Sun, and Venus will disappear from our view for 8 days. When Venus “goes dark,” we can use her descent into the primordial heart to review the state of our own hearts’ emotions, interpersonal relationships, values, and creative springs. This is the time to cleanse our subconscious, eliminate outdated baggage, and exorcise emotional or relationship demons. Now is the time to clean out and clean up what no longer serves your heart.
The Venus Rose ~ the Five Petals of Venus
Five Venus phase cycles take almost eight years to complete. The inferior conjunction points trace a pentagram around the zodiac in the five successive phase cycles.
Venus creates what is often called the “Venus Rose” or the Petals of Venus, two geometric designs over an eight-year cycle. Venus returns to the same place in the sky every eight years on about the same date. During this cycle, her movements will trace a Pentagram, a five-pointed star. Also, she will create an octagram, an eight-pointed star between the Earth and the Sun.
These geometric designs are created as Venus aligns with the Earth and the Sun five times. As she completes five synodic cycles, she will trace out a pentagram. The octagram is created every eight years when she returns to the same point in the sky where the cycle originally began. On February 3rd, the goddess of love entered Aries, traditional astrologers consider this a determent placement for Venus. Traditional astrologers felt Venus in Aries was too assertive, independent, and provocative. Venus in Aries goes against gender stereotyping; she is enterprising, bold, passionate, and confident! On March 1st, Venus will station to retrograde, she will fall back into the sign of her exaltation, Pisces on March 28th, and will station to direct on April 12th. She completes her retrograde cycle when she returns to 10 degrees of Aries on May 15th!
What to Expect when Venus Goes Retrograde
When Venus goes retrograde, it’s an opportunity to reassess what, who, and why we value, love, and cherish. This period is a time to review, analyze, and rethink our personal and romantic relationships. Both Venus and Mars’ retrograde periods allow us to examine our current situations with greater introspection and discernment. To avoid misunderstandings in our relationships, refrain from second-guessing situations or making assumptions during the retrograde.
The Venus retrograde is an auspicious time to get serious about organizing our finances, creating a budget, or re-organizing or restructuring a business. It is an excellent time to renegotiate a financial situation or resolve a long-standing legal situation. It is a good time to review your financial situation, seek financial advice, or research ways to initiate financial improvements in your life. This is the time to re-imagine how you want your Venus life to be!
You can research and plan events, but you should throw the party, the wedding, and the fundraiser once Venus has left the post-retrograde shadow. I do not recommend having plastic surgery or any type of physical beautification during the Venus retrograde cycle!
It is not uncommon, during a Venus retrograde, to experience someone from your past showing up unexpectedly. The unexpected visit can provide an opportunity to reconnect, mend relationship wounds, or reminisce about shared past experiences with friends, family, and or past lovers. If possible, do not initiate new romantic relationships, and certainly do not get married when Venus is retrograde. Relationships started during a Venus retrograde often have a past life or karmic signature that can create a powerful bond. The relationship that begins under a retrograde can thrive but can also be challenging and intense. If you were born with Venus retrograde or your Venus progressed into retrograde, these rules do not apply for you. (This is information you would know if you had an astrologer.)
The Venus retrograde cycle encourages internal reflection about all our meaningful relationships. This is a good time to practice discernment by stepping back to review what is working and what is not working in all the areas of life associated with Venus, relationships, sexuality, values, and finances.
If you have been avoiding facing sensitive, emotional issues, now is the time. Start therapy to address issues regarding self-worth, insecurities, and unresolved trauma wounds.
If during the Venus retrograde, you decide that you should make necessary adjustments, do so when the Venus retrograde cycle is completed. If you plan to end a significant relationship, don’t do it during Venus retrograde. If possible, wait for Venus to leave the Post Retrograde Shadow. ( May 15th )
DO NOT purchase big-ticket items (houses, cars). If the purchase cannot be returned, do not buy it. This is a great time to find bargains. Hit the flea market and the secondhand stores to find old items that can be refurbished or items that someone had thrown out not knowing their true value.
The 2025 Venus Retrograde Fire & Water
The zodiac sign Aries is a masculine cardinal fire sign ruled by the planet Mars, known for being bold, competitive, and adventurous, as well as impulsive, aggressive, and domineering.
Venus in Aries can be passionate, romantic, and fun-loving, but the need for freedom and independence can interfere with committed relationships. Traditional astrologers consider this placement to be in determent. When Venus is retrograde in Aries, it is an excellent time to examine if we have found a good balance between meeting our personal needs and the needs of others. This Venus placement can light a spark, get snarky and reckless, and relationship interactions can get messy. Use this firebrand energy to stand up for yourself.
The zodiac sign Pisces is a feminine, mutable, water sign co-ruled by the planets Jupiter and mystical Neptune. Pisces are known to be sensitive, deeply emotional, and intuitive. Pisces can be secretive, feel misunderstood, and lack boundaries and backbone. Venus in Pisces, in her exaltation, enhances psychic ability, imagination, and creativity. When Venus is retrograde in Pisces, it is an excellent time to explore your emotions about your relationships. Are you happy? Are there co-dependent issues? Is there a balance of give and take in your relationships? Examine if there are any areas in life where you might be unrealistic or not living up to your highest potential. How can you expand or improve your spiritual or artistic path?
Remember to use the Venus retrograde to evaluate the state of all your relationships, including friendships, romantic partnerships, co-workers, and family. Take the time to examine what’s working and what needs improving in your relationships. Why are you drawn to certain people? Do you have a relationship pattern? Do you feel loved, cherished, valued, respected, and understood in your relationships? Can differences, disagreements, or irritations in your relationship be resolved or mitigated? Are you willing to put the time and energy into making the necessary changes to improve your relationships? What do other people need to contribute to creating relationship balance? The Venus retrograde can offer the opportunity for reconciliation and therapeutic healing. If you decide that a relationship is not serving your needs and you need to end the relationship, try to wait until the Venus Post-Shadow is over on May 15th.
This Venus retrograde will be significant for individuals with planets and angles in cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) and mutable signs (Pisces, Gemini, Virgo, and Sagittarius). Individuals with Cardinal angles or planets between 0′ and 15′ degrees and mutable angles and planets between 14′ and 29′ degrees will find this Venus retrograde challenging.
